Spoilers warning: new still under the cut.

RADIO TIMES – This Sunday, series five of Downton Abbey will come to an end with a suitably special occasion: the wedding of Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge.

The newly engaged pair have wasted no time tying the knot but when it comes to Rose’s wedding dress, there will be no skimping on style, either.

“Lady Rose would have had her wedding dress made especially for her big day, so I was anticipating having to make something for her from scratch,” says Anna Mary Scott Robbins, Downton’s costume designer, in this week’s Radio Times.

“As it happened, we had the biggest stroke of luck” – finding a beaded, original 1920s dress that matched Rose’s “feminine, pretty and frivolous” style.

The dress she wears is a completely original piece that we unearthed in a vintage shop in immaculate condition. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up when we found it and when Lily James put it on, it was one those perfect moments you don’t get that often in your career.”

When it comes to Rose’s impending nuptials, fans’ fingers will be crossed that she fares better than Lady Mary, whose husband Matthew died months after their wedding day; Lady Edith, who was jilted at the altar; and Lady Sybil who died before seeing her first anniversary.

“I just hope that she has better luck in marriage than her cousins,” says Scott Robins. “Maybe we could finally see a fairy-tale ending befitting of her and her dress.”
